Welcome to Zahia's Program

This individualized guide is built on the foundational belief that Brain Plasticity allows the brain to develop at any age. Zahia's program is specifically designed for higher support needs, with every exercise adapted for hand-over-hand assistance. The focus is on deep regulation first β€” bringing her nervous system to a calm, receptive state before any learning can happen.

Zahia's Profile

  • ✦ Nonverbal / very limited communication
  • ✦ Obsessive and repetitive behaviors
  • ✦ Pica (mouthing/eating non-food items)
  • ✦ Sleep disruption & nighttime incontinence
  • ✦ Hair pulling (trichotillomania)
  • ✦ Low dopamine β†’ difficulty initiating tasks
  • ✦ ASD + learning disability + attention challenges

Zahia's Goals

  • ✦ Increased regulation & calmer transitions
  • ✦ Reduced sensory overwhelm
  • ✦ More connection & communication opportunities
  • ✦ Decrease obsessive/self-stimulatory behaviors
  • ✦ Reduce pica & hair pulling through sensory replacement
  • ✦ Stronger attention during 1:1 learning
  • ✦ Improved sleep quality
⚑

Zahia's Dopamine Challenge β€” Addressing the Root

Research strongly suggests that Zahia's difficulty initiating tasks, following directions, and beginning any activity is linked to low dopamine levels. Dopamine is the brain's "motivation and reward" neurotransmitter β€” without sufficient dopamine, the brain simply cannot generate the drive to start or sustain any activity.

Every session MUST begin with a dopamine primer β€” a short, highly engaging, sensory-rich activity that floods the brain with dopamine BEFORE asking Zahia to do anything else. This is not optional β€” it is the key that unlocks her ability to participate.

Deep Regulation Warm-Up

Always First Β· Brainstem Regulation Β· 2 Minutes

⚠️ This is non-negotiable for Zahia. Her nervous system must be brought out of fight/flight before any other exercise can be effective. Do this EVERY session, EVERY time.

Butterfly Breathing
Regulation Β· Step 1
🀝 Hand-Over-Hand

Butterfly Breathing

⏱ 30 seconds
  1. 1Guide Zahia's arms to cross over her chest
  2. 2Tap left shoulder, then right, alternating slowly
  3. 3Breathe slowly together β€” model the breath
  4. 4Use a calm, low voice: 'Breathe in… breathe out…'
🧠 Brain Effect: Bilateral stimulation activates vagus nerve, rapidly shifts from fight/flight to calm
Deep Pressure
Regulation Β· Step 2
🀝 Hand-Over-Hand

Deep Pressure Shoulders

⏱ 5 seconds Γ— 3 repetitions
  1. 1Place both hands firmly on Zahia's shoulders
  2. 2Press down with firm, steady pressure for 5 seconds
  3. 3Release completely
  4. 4Repeat 3 times, breathing slowly together
🧠 Brain Effect: Proprioceptive input calms the nervous system, reduces sensory seeking & hair pulling urges
Slow Rocking
Regulation Β· Step 3
🀝 Hand-Over-Hand

Slow Rocking

⏱ 30–45 seconds
  1. 1Sit behind Zahia or beside her on the floor
  2. 2Gently rock her side to side with your hands on her hips
  3. 3Keep rhythm slow and predictable β€” like a metronome
  4. 4Hum a low, steady tone while rocking (activates vagus nerve)
🧠 Brain Effect: Vestibular input is the most powerful regulator of the nervous system. Slow rocking directly calms the brainstem and reduces obsessive behaviors.

Pica & Hair Pulling β€” Sensory Replacement

Safety-First Sensory Substitution Protocol

🍬 Pica Safety Protocol

Pica is driven by sensory-seeking in the oral motor system. The goal is to provide safe, satisfying oral input that meets the same sensory need.

  • ✦Chewy Tubes / Chewelry: FDA-safe silicone chewable jewelry worn around the neck β€” always accessible
  • ✦Crunchy Foods First: Offer crunchy snacks (carrots, pretzels) before sessions to satisfy oral input need
  • ✦Vibrating Oral Massager: Use a safe oral vibrating tool for 30 sec before activities β€” satisfies deep oral input
  • ✦Blowing Activities: Blow bubbles, blow a pinwheel, or blow cotton balls. Organizes oral motor system.
  • ✦Textured Teethers: Keep safe textured items available as a constant alternative to non-food items

βœ‹ Hair Pulling (Trichotillomania)

Hair pulling provides deep tactile and proprioceptive input. Replace with equally satisfying alternatives that meet the same sensory need.

  • ✦Fidget Tools: Stretchy fidget bands, textured balls, or tangles β€” kept in reach at all times
  • ✦Deep Scalp Massage: Give firm scalp massage with fingertips for 30 sec when pulling urge appears
  • ✦Brushing Protocol: Wilbarger brushing on arms and legs provides deep proprioceptive input that reduces pulling urge
  • ✦Hair Accessories: Comfortable headbands or buns reduce hair accessibility while providing head pressure
  • ✦Weighted Lap Pad: During sitting activities, a weighted lap pad provides calming proprioceptive input that reduces self-stimulation

Targeted 2-Minute Add-Ons

Zahia-Specific Β· Nonverbal + Pica + Obsessive + Regulation + Hair Pulling + Concentration

πŸ—£οΈ Nonverbal Communication

2-Min Communication Bridge

  • 1.Eye Contact Game: Hold a preferred object near your face. Wait for eye contact. Celebrate with big smile. 30 sec.
  • 2.Cause & Effect: Press a button toy together. Pause. Wait for her to reach or look. Builds intentional communication.
  • 3.Imitation Sequence: Clap 2x, wait for her to imitate. Build to 3-step sequences. Activates mirror neurons.
  • 4.PECS/Picture Exchange: Present 2 pictures. Guide her hand to choose one. Honor the choice immediately.
πŸ” Obsessive Behavior Interrupt

2-Min Behavior Redirect

  • 1.Sensory Bin Redirect: When obsessive behavior starts, immediately offer a sensory bin (rice, beans, water). Redirects the sensory need.
  • 2.Movement Break: 10 jumps or bounces. Discharges the nervous system energy driving the behavior.
  • 3.Deep Pressure Reset: Firm bear hug for 10 seconds. Proprioceptive input interrupts the obsessive loop.
  • 4.Preferred Activity Transition: Use a visual timer + preferred activity as the "next" to support transition away from the behavior.
⚑ Concentration Igniter

2-Min Dopamine + Focus Primer

  • 1.Vestibular Activation: 20 seconds of bouncing or rocking. Vestibular input is the fastest route to dopamine release.
  • 2.Preferred Music Snippet: 30 seconds of her favorite song. Music activates the dopamine reward pathway instantly.
  • 3.Visual Tracking: Move a bright object slowly left-right in front of her face. 20 sec. Activates visual attention circuits.
  • 4.Cause & Effect Toy: 30 seconds with a light-up or sound toy she controls. Builds agency and dopamine loop.
πŸŒ™ Sleep & Regulation

2-Min Bedtime Wind-Down

  • 1.Weighted Blanket: Apply 5–10 min before sleep. Deep pressure activates parasympathetic nervous system.
  • 2.Slow Rocking: 30 seconds of slow, rhythmic rocking. Vestibular input = melatonin trigger.
  • 3.Lavender Aromatherapy: Diffuse lavender in the room. Activates GABA receptors, promotes sleep onset.
  • 4.White Noise: Consistent background sound reduces sensory startles during sleep.
